Chokramudi Peak is one of the highest peaks of Munnar that attracts a wide range of trekkers. Being one of the highest peaks in Munnar, with an altitude of around 7,200 ft, Chokarmudi peak gives a spectacular view of the tea plantations, Anamudi peak, and Idukki Dam. It is isolated from other hill ranges of Munnar, but sunrise at Chokramudi Peak is a sight that you should not miss if you’re at Munnar.
As the peak lies in the division of Eravikulam National Park, there are Forest department formalities that need to be fulfilled prior to the trekking. Though the peak is located in National Park, the hill is more beautiful with the evergreen Shola forests. The park is home to many rare species of plants and animals such as Nilgiri Tahrs, Gaurs, and Asian Elephants etc.

Chokramudi Peak Trekking
The trekking at Chokranmudi peak is simple and easy and only require a single day. It is relatively easy and short of about 10km that can be covered in 3-5 hrs. But depending upon the level of expertise you can extend the duration and distance as well. The trekking spot of Chokramudi is an ideal place for amateur trekkers who wish to have an awesome beginning. And it is advised to pack lunch and other snacks to have the afternoon.
Best Time to visit Chokramudi
As the ambience implies, Munnar unveils its ravishing beauty in the winter seasons. By December the valleys and ranges will be covered by fog. You can feel the biting cold with the pleasant scenery from December to February. Hence it is the ideal time to visit and trek Chokramudi peak. The misty atmosphere and cool breeze attract a wide range of tourists to the spot. Therefore, you can experience adventurous trekking at Chokramudi during this season.

How to kick-start trekking in Chokramudi?
A one hour drive from Munnar will take you to a start spot called Pothamedu. There you will be accompanied by advisors and Forest department officials who will give instructions about the do and don’ts of trekking. If you are an amateur trekker and need a guided trek, this may be ideal. If you start the trek as early as possible, you can end it by evening.
A 7-hour trek with extra 100 meters can be arranged in which the final stretch will be pretty harder than increasing the trek difficulty. Normal treks are relatively easy with long walks while risky ones are adventurous. The trek starts with the tea plantations where you can witness the Annamalai hills in the background. The off-road ride will be adventurous when the rocks get steeper. You can see wide species of flora and fauna on the way.
Instructions for Chokramudi Trekking
- Carry a good amount of water if u want to go to the top
- Not Recommended for Children or Senior Citizens
- Wear Comfortable Shoes for comfortable trekking
- Try to do the trek very early in the morning to watch the sunrise
The trek moves from tea plantations to ranges of grassland with rocky terrain. The misty climate along with the coverings of the Shola forest provides you with an enchanting experience that remains mesmerizing. Don’t forget to take a break and absorb the fantastic view of tea and Cardamom plantations that blanket the entire hill green! After 2-3 hours you will reach the Chokramudi peak where you can relax and enjoy the view for a while. There you can have your lunch or snacks and continue the return journey. The return trek is considerably short and will take only about 1-1.5 hours to be completed.
As per the instructions of the Forest Department, you can either camp at the foothills or camp in Munnar. By evening the trek will be complete. You can simply sit back and rewind the fascinating moments by sipping a cup of hot Munnar tea once you are back.

Yes, It’s very easy n enjoyable to reach there by bike. Entry charges are rs. 400 per person.
