Mattupetty Dam is a strong concrete gravity dam and was constructed for water conservation and power generation. It is located inside the hills of Munnar and near Anamudi peak and lies at a height of 1700m. The lush green valleys and the serene surroundings can easily captivate anybody visiting here. What to know about Mattupetty Dam in Munnar
Mattupetty dam was constructed in late 1940 under the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project. This dam is now a crucial source of electricity generation in Munnar. This is an important source of water for animals and birds. Rivulets and cascades criss-cross the terrain that adding more beauty and attraction to this place. The dam is also a great place to spot elephants as this reservoir is their favourite spot to drink water.
Mattupetty is also famous for its Indo Swiss Livestock Project. It is also called a cattle village as hundreds of high yielding breeds of cattle are reared here. Hundreds of high quality bred cattle grazing freely in lush green meadows is a unique view. This unique site is about 3 km from the dam and is handled by the Kerala Livestock Development and Milk Marketing Board.

Mattupetty dam is open for a visit for all days of the week. It doesn’t remain closed for tourists on any day. Timing for visit is from 9:30 a.m. in the morning till 5:30 p.m. in the evening.

Entry fees are Rs. 10/- per person. Fees for boating and speed boating vary as per choice.

Best Time to visit Mattupetty Dam in Munnar
Though Munnar and its nearby places are fit to visit throughout the year, the best time to visit Mattupetty dam is between August to May. The rainy season makes it a bit tough to reach out there in June and July.
